In Plain English

Words upon words
Gave shape to lilac mornings and daffodil afternoons.
Covered mouths but speaking eyes
Asked, do I dare? Oh, how we laughed!

I never sought to sell certainty as such;
A rubric dressed up like a good idea,
Kitsch words garlanded to kibosh
The suspicion that this doesn’t mean anything.

I hated to contain a law unto yourselves;
In der Beschränkung zeigt sich erst der Meister,
But only those you choose, as the truth
You are yet to become and are already.

Farewell then,
My glass half-full,
My class half-done;
Thank you for everything you’ve taught me.
